Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) has announced her candidacy for Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the 116th Congress.

Huffington Post reporter Daniel Marans posted a screenshot of the press release on Monday, July 23.

"There is nothing more important than returning bold Democratic leadership to Congress," Lee wrote in the letter to her Democratic colleagues.

According to Vox, Lee will be facing off against fellow California Democrat Representative Linda Sánchez. The coveted seat recently opened following Chair Joe Cromley's primary defeat, who was bested by newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

"Whether it's working across the aisle to enact HIV/AIDS laws, or bringing the Sanders and Clinton campaigns together behind a cohesive and progressive Democratic Platform, my career has been dedicated to finding common ground and delivering results," she continued. "Over the years, I have fought to lift families out of poverty and empower everyday people. As your caucus chair, I will ensure that we hear every view, respect every member, and welcome every voice."

Lee recently made her support for unions clear when she visited Detroit to speak with teamsters regarding potential pension cuts and how it affects union members.

Should Lee or Sánchez win the bid, it'll mark the first time a woman has held the position.
